What started from the doldrums of basements and rooms at the local recreational facility has grown to become one of the most profitable businesses ventures in the world. In the last year, 15 million people regularly participated in yoga in the United States and more than $27 billion was spent on yoga products.
Yoga initially was introduced to the U.S. in the late 19th century, but it only transitioned to its popularity over the past decade or so. Bill Harper, the publisher of Yoga Journal, told The Coast News that the reason why one in 10 Americans are yoga enthusiasts is due to peer pressure, celebrity pressure and the various health benefits.
Industry experts say this is a long-term trend and the yoga sector is not just a short-term boom. Since nearly each region in the U.S., especially in the pacific, is practicing yoga and companies are looking to associate their products or services with wellness, the forecasts might perhaps be correct.
Here are some other statistics to look at: an 87 percent increase in yoga product spending over the past five years, 20 percent annual increase in number of yoga participants, nearly three-quarters of yoga users are female and insurance companies are already paying for yoga.
"That’s why a company like Lululemon has had such a monstrous increase in sales,” Harper said in an interview with the news outlet. “They’ve done a great job of marketing, but they’ve also ridden the growth of yoga and for lack of a better word, the ‘hipness’ of yoga because there’s lots of people who are buying Lululemon clothes that probably don’t do yoga but they kind of like the idea of it. Kind of like Nike when they first got into running business, it was cool to wear a pair of Nikes even though you never set foot on a track."
