Time to wade in on the controversy that should not be a controversy at all on Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson and his remarks on gays. A few key points are being woefully missed in the current brouhaha.
First, the free speech clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution is not intended to protect speech that we like. The exact opposite is true. The First Amendment exists to protect speech we deplore.
Think about it. Why else would the founding document of the government of the United States contain a provision that would protect speech. No one has a problem with speech they agree with. The problem emerges when others say things we disagree with, things we may find to be abhorrent and despicable.
One of our Founding Fathers is said to have famously uttered the words, "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Today in America the progressive neo-liberal collectivists wish to ban what they call "hate speech." But what is hate speech, and who is the chosen authority to define it?
One such obnoxious hammerhead appeared on Fox News' Sean Hannity program to say that Phil Robertson engaged in hate speech and thus should be fired from the show and not allowed to speak his mind in public. She went further to assert that all such hate speech should be outlawed.
Take a few moments and ponder over the grave significance of her words. Unless your speech is acceptable to the speech police, you should be muzzled from speaking your views in public.
What if I were to tell this totalitarian Commie-Nazi that I find her statement to be hate speech. After all, she is showing her hatred for anyone who dares say something that she considers unacceptable, so much hate in fact that she would render their freedom of speech null and void. This is about as hateful as a human being can get. In the 20th century alone there were numerous examples of this kind of thinking, and in each instance they were exhibited by Communists, Nazis, Fascists, and other proponents of totalitarian governments that proved to be cruel, inhumane, and infinitely intolerant.
And this is not to mention that these forms of government are singularly responsible for the slaughter of over 100 million of their own citizens.
Yes, I believe that the woman's speech is hate speech. But I am not threatening to outlaw her right to speak her mind. She, on the other hand, would outlaw mine if I say I believe that homosexual acts are considered sinful by the Bible.
But the Bible considers a lot of acts to be sinful. Adultery, stealing, and lying are but a few. The Bible's teaching on homosexual activity must be considered within the context of other sins that are condemned just as vehemently.
One of the passages of scripture indicating these things is Romans 1: 26-32:
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
Second, America's hypocrisy is on full display when it comes to the Phil Robertson case. Notice what Robertson did not say. He did not say he wanted to outlaw homosexuality. He did not say that homosexuals should be mistreated in any way. He did not say that he believes there should be legal consequences for anyone who practices homosexual acts. He did not say that homosexuals should not be allowed to speak their minds about their sexual preference. He merely stated his views and beliefs, and the views taught in the Bible which forms the basis of Christian doctrine and practice.
Yet, America (or at least the elitists and progressives) seems to be intent on embracing practicing Muslims who believe the Koran, and who have stated that homosexuals should be stoned to death.
Did you know, Ms. Progressive, that Islam outlaws homosexuality? That the Koran prescribes the penalty for committing homosexual acts? And that the penalty for committing these acts is death?
Yet you invariably take sides against Israel in order to embrace extremist Muslim forces in the Middle East. How does this square with your harsh treatment of Christians? The New Testament in the Bible does not teach that homosexuals should be stoned to death or that they should not be allowed to speak their views. Some Christian churches even go out of their way to embrace homosexuals and receive them into church membership, depending on how liberal they are.
I know of no conservative, evangelical Christian who advocates for the persecution of homosexuals. And they certainly do not call for the death penalty to be used against them. Yet you would lambaste the conservative Christian for his beliefs while fully embracing Muslims who would kill homosexuals if there were in the majority.
And don't bother using the Fred Phelps hate cult as an example of what conservative Christians believe. We do not accept the Westboro Baptist Church as either Baptist or Christian. They are a hate cult, period. They have even harassed Billy Graham. They do not represent us in any manner whatsoever.
Political correctness is ruining America, and it is only getting worse by the day. When people are forced to suffer for speaking their minds, and when progressive oppressors propose that they be muzzled by law, then we have come dangerously close to becoming a censored totalitarian society, which is the ultimate goal of the progressives to begin with.
We had best get busy, folks. Decisive action is needed to nip this in the bud, now, or else we will be going to war in short order, a war that will be more devastating than anything the United States has ever seen in its history.
