Free organic gardening class kicks off library's gardening series

The first in a series of four free presentations on gardening will take place in the Montrose Library meeting room on Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m. Chet Byler of Straw Hat Farm will be teaching an introductory class on organic gardening. Straw Hat Farm has been a Certified Organic operation since 1997, and their booth appears regularly at the Montrose Farmer's Market. Mr. Byler will be discussing organic pest protection, soil amendments, improving plant health and how to begin and manage an organic garden.

The next classes in the series will be Introduction to Beekeeping (April 22, Earth Day), Seed Saving and Seed Swap (April 27) and Plan Your Garden With Your Harvest in Mind (May 7). The Seed Saving and Seed Swap class will also be discussing setting up a local seed bank. Participants are encouraged to bring some favorite seeds to share.

All of the classes will be held in the library meeting room at 7 p.m. except for the Seed Saving presentation, which will be at 1 p.m.. All are open to the public. For more information, contact Meg Nagel at 964.2548
