As part of an ongoing series of Swap-Bot swaps for 5 inch afghan squares, I've been designing a few different granny squares. This variation on a traditional granny square contains a round of triple crochet added in a non-traditional way, giving it a slightly different look.
The example shown was crocheted with worsted weight yarn and a size G hook. Finished size will vary based on yarn selection, hook size, and tension.
Almost Traditional Granny Square
Ch 5; sl st into 1st ch to form ring.
R1: Working in ring, *dc 3, ch 1* repeat 4 times; sl st into 1st st at beginning of round.
R2: Ch 3. *Tc between 1st and 2nd dc of previous rnd cluster; tc between 2nd and 3rd dc of cluster. In ch sp at corner, tc 3, ch 1, tc 3.* In last corner sp, count the ch 3 from beginning of round as the final (6th) tc in the corner; sl st into ch space at beginning of round. Fasten off and weave in ends; change colors.
R3: Sl st into ch sp at one of the corners with new color. *In corner space, dc 3, ch 1, dc 3; ch 1, dc 3 in next ch sp* around; sl st into 1st st of round. Fasten off and weave in ends; change colors.
R4: Sl st into ch sp at one of the corners with new color. *In corner space, dc 3, ch 1, dc 3; ch 1, dc 3 in next ch sp* around; sl st into 1st st of round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
