Niki Lauda will be on hand at the Beverly Hilton Sunday night to participate in HFPA's festivities honoring film and television. "Rush," the 2013 feature film directed by Ron Howard and based on the 1976 rivalry between Lauda and James Hunt, was nominated for two Golden Globes -- in the categories of Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Bruhl, who plays Lauda.

"Rush's" competitors in the Best Picture category, according to HFPA, are:

  • "12 Years a Slave"
  • "Gravity"
  • "Captain Phillips"
  • "Philomena"

Daniel Bruhl's competitors for the Best Supporting Actor nod are:

  • Michael Fassbender in "12 Years a Slave"
  • Jared Leto in "Dallas Buyers Club"
  • Bradley Cooper in "American Hustle"
  • Barkhad Abdi in "Captain Phillips"

The annual HFPA Golden Globes are often regarded as precursors to the coveted Academy Awards, where the iconic "Oscar" statuette is presented to films, crews, and performers in the United States.

In Britain, "Rush" has been nominated for four BAFTA awards. These will be presented on February 10.

Niki Lauda won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1975, then endured a horrific accident in the 1976 season. However, he came back in just six weeks to compete again that year, winning the hearts of many Formula 1 fans by his courage. He went on to win the championship two more times.

According to HFPA, the 2014 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on NBC, beginning at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
