Forgotten shelter dog appears to have frozen to death in outdoor kennel run

Batman, an elderly pit bull, is dead today, the apparent victim of a fatal oversight which seems to have led to his untimely demise.

According to Tuesday's WVEC News, the ten-year-old dog was somehow left outside in a dog run area at the Virginia Beach Animal Control Shelter on Sunday.

On Sunday night, as the temperatures plunged down to the low 20s, the forgotten dog was alone in the outdoor run, subjected to the bitter cold.

Late Monday morning, a shelter volunteer discovered Batman's unresponsive body. Though CPR was attempted, it was too late and Batman could not be brought back.

Now, an investigation is underway by the Virginia Beach Police Department to see exactly what went wrong. As part of the investigation, the facility's policies and procedures will be reviewed to see if they were followed, and if anything needs to be changed.

A necropsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of Batman's death.
