A dog is lucky to be alive today after his owner dragged him behind a sports utility vehicle in Palm Bay, Fla., at upwards of 45 miles per hour, reported Wednesday's Click Orlando News.
Police who responded to the call discovered an injured pit bull, along with his owners, Christopher and Chanel Byrd, in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant.
When questioned, Christopher Byrd explained that he had put the dog's leash on the vehicle's trailer hitch while he loaded his children into the SUV; he claimed to have forgotten that he had attached the dog to the vehicle before driving away.
Another motorist noticed the shocking scene and flagged Byrd down; he stopped the vehicle after being alerted to what was happening.
According to the Associated Press, Byrd has been arrested on a charge of animal cruelty. The injured dog, who had bloodied paws and an injury to his side, is expected to survive; he was taken away by animal control.
