Daytona Beach firefighters found a barge “…fully involved with fire…” in the Halifax River Friday night, after they were called to a boat fire at around 10 p.m. The fire happened after a fireworks show, according to Daytona Beach Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Larry Stoney. No one was reported hurt in the incident, in the river east of the Daytona Beach City Island Library. Fire crews fought the blaze initially from the Daytona Beach Police Department’s Marine unit. However, shallow water and some mechanical problems hampered their efforts. Once the current brought the barge closer to shore though, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze completely from along the riverside.
The Coast Guard was also notified of the blaze, but was unable to assist due to the shallow water. Lt. Stoney says the State Fire Marshall’s Office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
