Teri James, fired for premarital sex, is suing her former employer. Famed attorney, Gloria Allred, is representing the pregnant woman in a lawsuit over wrongful termination. The San Diego woman, who allegedly signed a covenant which forbids, among other things, "sexually immoral behavior, to include sex before marriage, was let go in October. She says the firing out of wedlock was insulting.
According to a Life Inc, on Feb. 29, San Diego Christian College faces a civil lawsuit after it fired James for premarital sex. While the school cited its policy given up front to all incoming employees, the terminated worker says that she was humiliated over the incident.
The lawsuit says the woman worked for the school for two years and signed the college's covenant in August, supposedly weeks before she became pregnant.
One day, without warning, her supervisor called her into the office and asked her about rumors regarding being with child. After she confirmed her pregnancy, she was fired for having sex out of wedlock.
James said she then had to go into the office and tell all of her co-workers she would not be returning. And while she didn't stick around, the woman could only imagine the gossip that began after everyone learned she was fired for having premarital sex.
And to add insult to injury, her fiance was then offered the woman's job, although it was obvious he had engaged in sex before marriage.
In the past, several other religious organizations came under fire for allegedly firing women who got pregnant. In some cases, courts upheld the lawsuits. However, in others, judges said religious organizations have the right to fire anyone who is not fit to lead a ministry in a moral manner. Imagine that?
James hopes to not only clear her name from the alleged humiliating act; she wants to change the way the public and religious organizations treat women who want to start a family.
"I want to pave the way, say, Christian organizations, you can't necessarily fall back on this. You can't hurt people like this. If you say that you stand for love and mercy and grace -- stand for those who are weak," James said.
Should the woman have gotten fired over premarital sex and getting pregnant behind it?
