Fight to save wolf packs in Idaho's No Return Wilderness rages on

Wildlife advocate Ralph Maughan of Idaho has joined forced with Wilderness Watch and several other conservation groups in filing an emergency injunction in federal court to put an immediate halt to a program to exterminate the Monumental and Golden wolf packs in the 2.4 million –acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The kill program has been given the support of the US Forest Service. Although the judge denied the petition, Earthjustice, which represents Wilderness Watch and the other plaintiffs countered by filing an appeal to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on January 21st.

The groups contend that the Forest Service (in charge of administering the area) has trampled all over the Federal Wilderness which “requires land managers to protect and administer designated areas so that they remain wild,” when it authorized the extermination project by “approving the use of one of its cabins and airstrip to support a hired hunter-trapper to pack into the area and kill the wolves.”

They also expressed their belief that part of the plan to kill the wolves involved “artificially inflating elk populations for outfitters and recreational hunters.”

The animal advocates are now asking readers to express their own outrage of efforts to exterminate the wolves by contacting Forest Service chief Tom Tidwell at ttidwell@fs.fed.us and Idaho Department of Fish and Game director Virgil Moore at vmoore@idfg.idaho.gov.
