Not sure how this got under the radar but adorable actor Robert Downey Jr. was attired rather fashionably in his fitted Lederhosen (traditional Bavarian leather pants) while attending the German premiere of his film "Iron Man 3" at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof on April 12, 2013 in Munich, Germany.
Besides delighting the local photographers and press, who sighed and whistled as he showed up and kept reassuring him with “we love it,” what was the reason for the local getup? During the press interview, Robert Downey Jr. stated that he was part German on his mother Else’s side (from the family Schock) and it was in honor of her 79th birthday, which was the day before that he got dressed up in traditional costume.
Accompanying Downey Jr. at the photocall and press conference was costar Gwyneth Paltrow, who wore a simple white sleeveless sheath belted at the waist with a black band, that also matched her pointed black pumps.
Downey Jr. even got down cheekily on one knee, sitting in front of the photographers and gave direction as they shot pictures of Gwyneth.
But all the attention was on her costar Robert who entertained the photographers with his antics in their traditional Bavarian attire, which he teamed with a camel colored jacket, navy button-down shirt, printed green kerchief at the neck, matching green socks and brown hiking boots.
Not sure if those boots are Dr. Martens – though that would be extremely appropriate too as not far away is the original workshop for Dr. Martens footwear in Seeshaupt on the Starnberger Lake.
Downey Jr. accessorized his Lederhosen with a double silver chain that had assorted charms – medallions, bore tusks and a tiny fuzzy foot, much like a rabbit’s foot good luck charm.
The 48-year-old actor struck poses, pretending to see into the distance from an alpine cliff, shading his eyes as he did so. Then followed up with a slap dance. He asked the photographers to pan down to his crotch to get in close on the details, which they gladly obliged…
You can also see that the leather trousers have lovely embroidery featuring stags, right around the crotch flap that buttons up – no zippers here – it’s all strictly traditional. Nicely done Robert!
So I have to seriously apologize to Robert Downey Jr. fans out there for not being on top of this Munich premiere of Iron Man 3 in April. Making amends here by linking their interview in the second paragraph above, and giving you a video and stunning slideshow of Downey Jr. in rare form, showing his stuff, Bavarian style, at the Munich premiere…
