An East Point police officer shot and killed a man during a narcotics operation at a suspected drug house. But it was unclear Friday if the man was armed and his family members said he was only visiting the home.
They are trying to find out what happened.
About 4 p.m. the department’s narcotics unit arrived at the home at 3187 East Point St. to execute a search warrant, the police spokesman Lt. Cliff Chandler said.
Seven people were inside the home where undercover officers have allegedly bought drugs before, Lt. Chandler said.
“One of the people made a threatening move towards the officer and he ignored a verbal command to stop,” Lt. Chandler said. “Fearing for her safety, the officer fired one shot and hit the individual in the chest.”
Emergency workers rendered first aid on the man who was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Lt. Chandler said.
Family members told Channel 2 Action News that Mr. Dwight Person, 54, was just visiting his nephew's residence. They are trying to find out what happened.
"I don't know how she could have shot him," the man's mother, Ms. Verdelle Person, told the news station.
After the shooting, the officers pulled out of the home and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the shooting, Lt. Chandler said.
Officers did arrest six people on drug-related charges, two of them have since bonded out while the other four remained in jail Friday, Lt. Chandler said.
The lieutenant did not know what was found inside the home.
The officer, whose name has not been released, has been placed on paid administrative leave, Lt. Chandler said.
