Faithful dog returns to church where owner's funeral was held

German shepherds are known for their undying loyalty to their person. One dog in San Donaci near Brindisi, Italy, is exhibiting that amazing devotion in a heartbreaking vigil at the church where his owner's funeral was held two months ago.

According to Wednesday's Daily Mail, Tommy's guardian, Maria Margherita Lochi, adopted the dog who had been abandoned near her home.

The pair developed a special bond, and together, they would venture to the church daily where Tommy was allowed to sit at Lochi's feet.

After her death, Tommy attended the service, along with Lochi's other friends and family and since that day, he has continued return to the church where he patiently sits through mass.

Those in attendance at the services describe Tommy as "very well-behaved," and quiet.

Nobody has the heart to make the devoted dog leave and others in the area have taken it upon themselves to ensure that Tommy is provided with food and water.

Nobody, it seems, is able to help Tommy understand that his person is never coming back.

Tommy's devotion is reminiscent to the German shepherd, "Capitan," who has stood vigil by his deceased owner's grave in Argentina. For years, following that man's death, Capitan has made the cemetery his unofficial home.

There are times that even death cannot sever the bonds that love has built.
