Here is a story scenario you can use to help teach about Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey plus the importance of following directions.

Section 4: Read Hero’s Journey story: Water of Life
A. Teacher reads story to the class called “The Water of Life” by Andrew Lang. This story is part of his Pink Fairy Book collection.
B. Story Description: Three brothers and their little sister work very hard to build a palace, a church, and a garden on their land. People came from miles around to look and admire. An old man informed them they still lacked acquiring a branch from the tree of beauty, the water of life, and a talking bird. Each brother, in turn, attempted to acquire these three items. Each brother ran into danger since they did not fully follow the directions given by a kindly giantess. It was up to the Little Sister to attempt to save the day.

C. Optional activity that would give students the opportunity to compare and contrast Andrew Lang’s version of this story and the version collected by the Brothers Grimm. Teacher reads alternative story to the class called “The Water of Life.” This one is by the Brothers Grimm.
D. Story Description: A king has fallen ill. His three sons learned that if the king would drink a cup of the Water of Life, he would soon be well. The oldest brother sought permission to go in search of this miracle drink. Along the way, he met an ugly dwarf who would have been willing to help. Unfortunately, the oldest brother treated the dwarf rudely and thus, ran into trouble. The middle brother had the same experience. On the other hand, the youngest brother was kind to the dwarf and asked for his advice. The dwarf, in return, gave him very good advice that led him to the miracle drink and much more besides. Read this story to find out what happens next.
