Epic feels 'very very bad' about Gears of War 2 multiplayer

Gears of War 2

When Gears of War 2 was released on the Xbox 360, playing the multiplayer portion of the game was, at best, a chore because of match-making issues that would cause the game to spend long periods of time finding online games.  In a surprising bit of candor, Cliff Bleszinski acknowledges the problems with Gears of War 2 multiplayer and promises that there are a number of steps they are taking to improve the online experience for Gears of War 3.

Straight out of the box, Gears of War 2's multiplayer in regards to matchmaking was very very clunky and very very seldom worked.  That's something we take very very seriously and feel very very bad about.

Epic worked hard to fix many of these problems and are still working on improving matchmaking and performance for online play.  Title Update 6 for Gears of War 2 is in work now to squash bugs and enhance Gears of War 2.

So what about Gears of War 3's multiplayer?  What improvements can we expect for online play?  Well the first thing that Epic is working on to improve lag and matchmaking is region-filtering to ensure the lowest possible lag.  The problem is allowing people from different countries to play with each other but it is something necessary to ensure that there's a big enough player population for everyone.  The trick is finding the balance or "magic secret sauce" as Bleszkinski puts it.

Other improvements to expect with the multiplayer for Gears of War 3 include being able to stick together with friends in a party.  Expect to see some favorite maps from the original Gears of War in Gears of War 3 as well though none specifically have been annonced.

They need to do a lot more innovating then just that; look at Crysis 2 and how it crushes Gears in every respect and its due out this Xmas, not a year from now. Maybe EPIC should also include a map editor and an open sandbox world for gears, along with much improved graphics. I think they should also have objectives, simular to the escalating objectives in Call of Duty, World at War's Zombie mode, in their multiplayer Execution or Warzone.

I AGREE 100% aea! And its there fault for listening to supposed "fans" in their forum, who were probably fan boys hell bent on sabotaging the games success... MORONS at epic! Did they not take a moment to think things through for themselves??? Retards! they need to put everything back the way it was in Gears 1, just improve graphics and mechanics and maps. That swamp had the best mood and graphics of both their games. Very natural

More than just the matchmaking was bad. The lag screwed up everything, and made the game incredibly clunky and frustrating to play. The controls need to be cleaned up, lag needs to be fixed, and the game overall needs to be more fluid. GeoW 1 and 2 had really good multiplayer... but after about 2 months I quit GeoW2 and went back to Halo 3 because of all it's issues. I really hope they make GeoW3's mp better.

I snapped my Gears 2 disc a LONG time ago... maybe I'll give this one a miss - because if I recall... the same thing was said for Gears 2 (less lag) and it turned out to be garbage!

Gears 1 was one of my favorite games - they ruined the MP experience with 2.

Two words that can fix Gears Multiplayer:

Dedicated servers. It isn't rocket science.

The one thing that they should bring back is the Gears 1 online play. Yes,I know finding the "ranked" game was hard, but I mean at least if you wanted to know the connection status it was there on the far right side with 3(Green),2(Yellow) or even 1 (red) bars. Gears 1 Multiplayer was amazing. Why,they decided to change it to Halo style I will never know... Ranking achivements (1-100) is dumb, and the fact that they give 1 guy host and usually everybody suffers but that one person. I mean in Gears one if you didn't like the host you could always host it yourself or find a different room. I love Gears, but I just get tired of the BS sometimes..

Sorry Epic, you already lost me as a fan. I played a ton of gears 1, but gears 2 was a complete joke. Even today it's junk when compared to other similar titles. There were launch titles on 360 that worked better than your crap game. You can expect me not to bother with gears 3, or any other title made by epic for that matter.
