Embracing organized religion

When engaging in discussions of various sorts it is important to define terms and to understand that there are many ways to define words. For example, there are grammatical definitions, philosophic definitions, theological definitions, etc.

Buddhism has been considered a religion for millennia and has sects which are, essentially, Atheistic (see here for more info).

Atheism itself is considered by many to be a religion (see here for more info).

There is also the political religion with the demigod inhabiting the oval office and his priests being in positions of power such as congress, senate, the media, etc. (and referring to the president as a demigod is no oddity when you consider, for example, the concept of apotheosis—which means to deify—such as that of George Washington (see attached slide show).

The fact that “religion” is generally defined as pertaining to a set of dogmas centered around a theology is simply an example of one kind of definition.

Within pop-occulture it is oh so hip to decry “organized religion”—as if disorganized religion is any better.

There are also many Christians (real, serious, fundamentalist, traditional, bible believing ones) who are horrified to be thought of as being “religious.” This is understandable in view of a definition of religion as an oppressive, hierarchic, authoritative, manmade power structure.

This is a concern for many and yet, as far as this definition is concerned see the article The Most Anti-Religion Book Ever Published since the Bible argues against such manmade systems.

Now, going by the only positive biblical definition of religion, we have to reconsider:

“Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27)

On this view, via this definition, one can gladly refer to themselves as “religious,” explain why we are glad of it and also embrace organizing in order to visiting orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

“First dentistry was painless, then bicycles were chainless, and carriages were horseless, and many laws enforceless.

Next cookery was fireless, telegraphy was wireless, cigars were nicotineless, and coffee caffeineless.

Soon oranges were seedless, the putting green was weedless, the college boy was hatless, the proper diet fatless.

New motor roads are dustless, the latest steel is rustless, our tennis courts are sodless, our new religion Godless.”
