James Kerstetter, an Elyria police officer, was shot and killed in the line of duty yesterday making him the first Elyria officer to be killed on the job in 67 years.

The alleged shooter, Ronnie Palmer, was still on the scene when officers arrived. According to witnesses, Palmer was shot and killed by the other officers when he lunged at them when they attempted to arrest him. Neighbors say the incident started over a dispute over children playing in his fish pond.

Last March, Palmer was arrested for domestic violence and subject to a court order prohibiting him from possessing a firearm. As happens all too often, the law was unable to deter a man with no respect for those laws.
