According to a report on Friday, the no-swag ingenuity of actress Eden Sher helped her "win the job," when she auditioned for "The Middle." Sher popped a set of removable braces on her teeth to better fit the role of the teen daughter in the ABC comedy. Although she may not have looked as pretty as teen rivals also auditioning, Sher's attention to accessory details paid off big time.
The braces have morphed into a style signature of the character, Sue Heck, and help Eden portray the appealing nerd in the show. The vivacious Sher also makes other fashion sacrifices for her role.
For the flat, oily hair look, Sher forsakes shampooing on the days she is filming and skips her make-up. For her character, natural brows are in and waxing is a forbidden no-no. If laying vanity on the altar of success seems extreme, remember that Lady Gaga created a fragrance with semen and blood. Compared to that, skipping a shampoo for a day seems refreshing.
Though wearing braces into perpetuity may seem a small fashion price to pay for stardom, Sher has asked more than once if it was possible to lose them. However, AP quoted Sher as saying, "The writers have stopped taking my calls on this."
Braces, no make-up, and stringy hair aren't the style swag teens are apt to make a trend. In the meantime, what works for Sher's character, pays off for Sher. At least she's not stuck with another nerd hallmark, horn-rimmed glasses, as well.
Watch for higher visibility for "The Middle" next fall when the show is set for wider syndication after four seasons. Until then, see it as a Wednesday night feature of ABC.
