CBS will go retro and unveil a marquee on the Ed Sullivan Theater Feb. 6 duplicating the one displayed there the night the Beatles first performed on “The Ed Sullivan Show” 50 years ago, the network announced Feb. 5. The unveiling takes place at 12:30 p.m. local time.
The retro look, which will feature the exact wording that was posted for “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb. 9, 1964, will cover the current “Late Show With David Letterman” marquee through the weekend in conjunction with CBS’s upcoming Beatles tribute, “The Beatles: The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute” that airs Sunday night.
The primetime special will be broadcast 50 years to the day, date and time of the Beatles' U.S television debut on the “Ed Sullivan Show” and feature popular artists covering the songs performed by the Beatles, footage from the Sullivan show and other archival material. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr taped an interview with David Letterman Tuesday for the special in the theater.
“Late Night With David Letterman” has been featuring a week of Beatles tributes by guest performers with Broken Bells on Monday (and who talked about their cover of “And I Love Her” after the broadcast) and Sting on Tuesday. The show will feature Lenny Kravitz tonight, Flaming Lips with Sean Lennon Thursday and Ms. Lauryn Hill on Friday.
