Easy Summer dessert: Blackberry frozen yogurt recipe

Summer is the season for ice cream and fresh fruit, so why not combine the two for the easiest summer dessert ever.  To lighten up dessert, this Examiner took store bought vanilla frozen yogurt and mixed in a delicious fresh blackberry puree.  There’s no need to turn on the stove for this dessert, just mix, freeze and serve!

These days, it seems like frozen yogurt is all the rage.  In the Hampton Roads area alone there are at least a half dozen self-serve frozen yogurt shops charging 40 cents an ounce for dessert.  While it may sound cheap, it’s actually cheaper to buy frozen yogurt and make fresh mix-ins.  Not only does it taste better, it serves a ton of people for around $5.

This may seem like a simple dessert, but the blackberry puree has two secrets – freshly ground nutmeg and black pepper.  This Examiner loves nutmeg and black pepper paired with fruit.  Both leave a twang that makes the flavor of the berries pop.  The best part about this method is that the options are endless; use different berries or experiment with different spices like cinnamon and allspice or freeze the yogurt into Popsicle molds for a fun treat!

Blackberry Frozen Yogurt – serves 8-10 people

  • 1.5 quarts vanilla frozen yogurt, softened
  • 1 pint fresh blackberries, washed
  • ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp freshly grated black pepper

In a blender or food processor combine the blackberries and spices; puree until very smooth.  Pour the puree through a fine mesh sieve to remove any seeds.

Place the softened frozen yogurt in a large bowl and mix in the puree.  This Examiner likes to leave it marbleized so one can see the white vanilla frozen yogurt and the beautiful purple blackberries.  Place the frozen yogurt back into the container, or just put a piece of plastic wrap right on top of the yogurt, and place in the freezer to harden; about 3 hours.

Serve with whole blackberries as a garnish.
