E! confuses Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer in pre-Oscar show; Twitter goes crazy

Ah, well… those of us watching the "E! Live From the Red Carpet" pre-Oscar show were quite amused to see that actress Octavia Spencer was identified as Viola Davis in the lower-thirds description.

"That's not Viola Davis!" I laughed to my husband, upon seeing the image of Davis' "The Help" co-star at first sight.

We can call it the Morgan Freeman/Bill Russell mix-up moment -- although to George Stephanopoulos' credit, those two guys actually do look a little bit alike.

And maybe the Viola Davis/Octavia Spencer confusion was due to the two women working so closely together in the same film. But it was funny -- and watching people immediately react on Twitter was pretty hilarious.

"Wooooow E! I can't believe you just labeled Octavia Spencer as Viola Davis on the red carpet," tweeted Alyssa Pugel ‏‪@adeanpugel, who is credited with snapping the screenshot.

At least by the time Spencer made it over to Ryan Seacrest for her on-air interview, he made sure to say "Octavia" several times, to let folks know that the error had been corrected.

Meanwhile, the tweets are coming in by the second about the faux pas, with all sorts of hashtags, calling it everything from awkward to fail to racist to "all black people look alike" and more.
