The Dunkin Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation is helping to fight hunger in America. The Foundation is partnering with Feeding America on a three-year US $1,000,000 grant to feed children. Announced in late March, the partnership will help tackle a crisis where over 20 percent of the nation's children are experiencing hunger.
Feeding America operates the largest network of foodbanks in the country. They depend on support from citizens, the government and businesses like Dunkin Donuts.
The funding will help Feeding America's BackPack program which provides children with food over weekends and school vacations. School pantries will also be supported.
During the school week needy children can receive free or reduced price lunch and breakfast through federal programs. When the weekend arrives, these children may not have access to food. The BackPack program is meant to provide that support when school is out.
The donation is the largest in the history of the Dunkin Donuts foundation.
Mitch Cohen, the Co-Chair of the Foundation, says, “Dunkin’ Brands and its franchisees are committed to serving the basic needs of our communities throughout the country, each and every day. One of the most pressing needs facing our communities is the fight against hunger, particularly childhood hunger. We are proud to make the largest donation in the Foundation’s history to Feeding America to support this cause and look forward to continuing to partner with the Feeding America network of food banks in 2014 and beyond.”
The donation comes at a time when food stamp benefits (SNAP) have been reduced for millions of Americans. This puts a further strain on foodbanks to help the hungry.
Maura Daly of Feeding America says, "Forty-nine million people –1 in 6 Americans – struggle with hunger, including nearly 16 million children. And while the economy is recovering, each year more and more people are turning to their local food bank for help. The support of our partners in the fight against hunger has never been more critical and we are extremely grateful to The Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation for their generous grant to help us distribute food to those who need it the most.”
