According to the Canadian Press, David Duncan of London, Ontario won the gold medal at a World Cup ski cross event in San Candido, Italy on Saturday.

Duncan recorded his fifth World Cup medal and first World Cup victory on Saturday. The timing is key because it comes with less than seven weeks until the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Alex Fiva of Switzerland won the silver medal with Brady Leman of Calgary winning the bronze medal. Duncan, Leman, and Christopher Del Bosco of Montreal, who won the gold medal in men's ski cross at the 2011 World Freestyle Skiing Championships in Deer Valley, Utah are expected to be a very formidable men's ski cross team for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Duncan was not the only Canadian skier to win a World Cup gold medal in Italy on Saturday. In the men's downhill event from Val Gardena, Italy, Erik Guay of Quebec City, Quebec was the fastest down the mountain in a World Cup race for the third time in his career.
