The Price Is Right host Drew Carey, who lost over 80 pounds last year, has maintained his stunning weight loss through portion control and running.
The 5'10" Carey, who once topped the scales at 260 pounds, feels more energetic and no longer needs to take his type 2 diabetes medication.
Lost 80 Lbs. In 6 Months With Daily Treadmill Workouts
"Exercise is the main thing that helped me lose weight," Carey, 53, says in the October 2011 issue of Runner's World. "It's the diet and the exercise together.
"People always ask how I lost 85 pounds, hoping I'll say, 'Just take this pill,' but it was a drastic lifestyle change. I went from sitting around doing nothing, eating Doritos and fettuccine to being active, exercising and eating well."
The dramatic metamorphosis began in January 2010, when Drew resolved to eliminate sugar and junk food from his diet and started doing 30 minutes of light exercise six days a week.
Fearing he might die before he could see his 6-year-old son grow up, Carey progressed over the next six months to 45-60 minutes of daily aerobic workouts on the treadmill or elliptical machine.
“I always thought I was going to die before I was 60,” Drew has said. “My father died of a heart attack in his 40s. I’m not an idiot. The writing was on the wall.”
'I Feel Like I'm Aging In Reverse'
Thanks to his hard work, Carey lost 80 pounds in six months (from January to July 2010) and no longer needs to take type 2 diabetes medication.
"I was taking Avandia (a diabetes drug) before and, like, five naps a day," Carey recounts. "I was always tired. I was always in denial about it before. Now I don't have to take any medication anymore. I feel like I'm aging in reverse."
In May 2011, Drew completed the grueling Marine Corps half-marathon in under two hours -- putting him in the top 25% of runners who completed the race.
Now content with eating a high-protein, low-carb diet packed with vegetables, Drew realizes that eating well and being healthy is its own reward.
"Eating crappy food is not a reward--it's a punishment," says Carey.
“The hardest diet I was ever on was the one when I was fat: You can only wear fat clothes, you don’t feel good, your sex life gets damaged, you don’t have energy for anything. It’s horrible.
This is how you’re supposed to feel every day. This is what I should have felt like my whole life! I look in the mirror and I feel like I’m in my 20s again. I feel like I have my whole life back. I could live to be 100 now."
