‘Dragons Age: Inquisition’ will feature dragons capable of full aerial flight

It is already known that Dragons Age: Inquisition is going to place fans inside a much larger game world than the first two titles of Bioware’s popular fantasy franchise. In order to make the best use of these bigger areas, the next installment will introduce dragons that will naturally fly in the sky. Chris Pickford, level design and art producer for Bioware Edmonton, revealed on Feb 1 that the dragons within the game will be capable of full flight after discussing level design issues during the course of development where the famed beasts will fly indefinitely rather than landing for combat.

Today's level design problem: the dragon is refusing to land and keeps flying circles in the sky. I love this job.

Also confirming the existence of dragon flight mechanics, Dragon Age: Inquisition Creative Director Mike Laidlaw spoke out on Saturday about the challenges of adding new gameplay features to the Frostbite 3 game engine. Laidlaw revealed that the new development engine, which the series is switching to for its next entry, didn’t have pre-defined specifications for handing the flight pathing for airborne dragons. This means that Bioware has had to create the code from the ground up.

Frostbite has had little need for, say, dragon flight pathing code. UNTIL NOW, that is.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is scheduled to releases on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 later this year.
