Dr. Oz: Wheat Belly Diet promotes rapid weight loss and melts belly fat

Dr. Oz said you can enjoy easy weight loss and prevent heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's by eliminating wheat from your diet on the Jan. 30 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.

"It's not sugar or fat that is making you pack on the pounds," said Dr. Oz, who said eating wheat makes you gain weight by increasing your appetite and making your body store fat.

Dr. Oz's guest was Dr. William Davis, author of the New York Times bestseller, Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight.

Dr. Davis, a cardiologist, said eliminating wheat from your diet not only produces effortless weight loss, but protects your heart and brain, and gives you glowing skin.

According to Dr. Davis, the wheat we consume today is totally different from the wheat our parents and grandparents ate because it has been scientifically engineered. He said today's "Frankenwheat" raises your blood sugar more than table sugar and most candy bars.

Surges in blood sugar is what causes weight gain, belly-fat storage, diabetes, arthritis and lupus. Dr. Oz said eliminating wheat from your diet has the following health benefits:

  • Better skin.
  • More energy.
  • Less brain fog.
  • Less joint pain.
  • Fewer digestive problems.

The Wheat Belly Diet includes the following:

  • Plenty of healthy animal fats, including those from chicken, cheese and eggs.
  • Lots of nuts, including pecans, walnuts and almonds.
  • Unlimited quantities of colorful vegetables like broccoli, peppers and mushrooms.
  • Restricted intake of high-sugar foods like rice, lentils and most fruits.

Dr. Davis has written a new book, the Wheat Belly Cookbook, that contains 200 wheat-free recipes that are healthy and taste great. He shared a sample recipe:

Wheat Belly Pizza (makes eight servings)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 pound bulk or loose sausage
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 wheat-free pizza crust
  • 2 cups sugar-free pizza or marinara sauce
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 red or green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan or Romano cheese.

Directions

  1. Preheat the over to 350°F.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Cook the sausage, onion, and garlic for 10 minutes, or until the sausage is cooked through and the onion is tender. Remove from the heat and drain if necessary.
  3. Place the pizza crust on a baking sheet. Top with the sauce, mozzarella, sausage mixture, bell pepper, oregano, and Parmesan or Romano. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons oil over the top.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes, or until browned and the cheese melts.
