Dr. Oz said dried white mulberries are a powerful super-food that accelerates weight loss and can prevent diabetes.
On the Dec. 30 episode of the Dr. Oz Show, he discussed the health benefits of the white mulberry. (This episode originally aired Sept. 30.)
"The white mulberry packs a remarkable nutritional punch," said Dr. Oz. "It has a way of stopping the processing of sugar before it starts."
Dr. Oz said the white mulberry fights high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease because they are rich in antioxidants (including resveratrol), fiber and protein. They taste like figs and have a consistency like raisins.
White mulberries are also high in vitamins C and B and low in sugar. One-third of a cup of white mulberries contains four grams of protein and 20 percent of your daily fiber needs.
What's more, Dr. Oz said white mulberries promotes weight loss by inhibiting the digestion of sugar, so sugar gets excreted instead of being absorbed into the bloodstream.
Studies show that a compound in the leaves of white mulberries, called 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), prevents spikes in blood sugar.
You can enjoy white mulberries as dried fruit or in tea. Dr. Oz said drinking white-mulberry tea with your meals helps control blood sugar and can ward off diabetes. "I love when food can cure us!" he said.
