Dr. Oz says laxatives are a very unsafe way to attempt weight loss, yet hundreds of people are using them regularly for that purpose. Laxative abuse was the topic at hand on the Jan. 29 episode of “The Dr. Oz Show.”
The doctor had women on the show who lost over a hundred pounds using laxatives alone. One guest started at 260 pounds and now weighs only 78 pounds due to excessive laxative use. Dr. Oz began efforts to get her back to health and explained why using laxatives is an unsafe way to diet.
Laxatives increase the amount of water in the intestines, which flushes everything out of the system at a quicker pace. This can lead to dehydration and the elimination of bacteria crucial in absorbing nutritents. Dr. Oz said this can lead to constipation and bloating.
Laxative abuse can also cause an overweight person to become malnourished. Dr. Oz warned this increases risk of exhaustion and illness. Using laxatives is not the way to lose weight.
