Dr. Oz on cancer fighting foods

Reduce cancer risks by eating cancer fighting foods regularly, advises Dr. Oz. Currently, there is no known cure for cancer. Taking steps to prevent cancer may be more practical than waiting for a cure. There are a lot of foods that help prevent the development of cancer. Three top choices of cancer fighting foods were presented on the Dr. Oz show.

Dr. Oz - Wild Blueberries. Wild blueberries are a super food rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals. Although all blueberries offer health benefits, wild blueberries are the most effective for fighting cancer. Mary Ann Lila, PhD, and guest on the Dr. Oz show, conducted several studies on the health benefits of wild blueberries. Her research indicated that "the compounds in wild blueberries may be effective inhibitors of both the initiation and promotion stages of cancer," (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2004). Wild blueberries are available at most supermarkets. "Check the frozen foods section when looking for the wild blueberries," said Dr. Lila.

Dr. Oz - Black Currants. According to Dr. Lila, black currants are an excellent cancer fighting food. They are a rich source of vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and other compounds which help protect the body against breast and colon cancer, and other illnesses. Black currants are also known to enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatments. Black currants are available at health food stores and many grocery stores in the form of juice and jam. Black currants are also available in a dried form, similar to raisins, and as a tea.

Dr. Oz - Muscadine Grapes. Muscadine grapes are a great source of polyphenolic antioxidants and other cancer fighting compounds. Research using muscadine grape components showed health benefits in the fight against blood, colon, and prostate cancer. Muscadine grapes can be eaten fresh, or consumed in the form of wine, juice and jelly. Muscadine grape products can be purchased at some health stores, and ordered on-line through websites such as E-Bay.

Reduce your chances of developing cancer by making cancer fighting foods part of your daily diet. "Small things done everyday make a difference. This is how we are going to beat cancer," said Dr. Oz.
