Today, U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann released the USA's final 23-player roster for 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and Landon Donovan is not on it. The final roster will be submitted to FIFA on June 2.
Donovan holds the U.S. record for World Cup appearances (12) and goals (5).
Klinsmann whittled down the 30-man May 12 roster and released Donovan and six other players from USMNT training camp, placed them on a standby list and returned them to their club teams. The seven players released from U.S. training camp are forwards Donovan and Terrence Boyd, midfielders Joe Corona and Maurice Edu, and defenders Parkhurst, Brad Evans and Clarence Goodson.
Now, the USA's World Cup roster will feature 10 MLS players and 13 players based abroad.
"It's an exciting moment when you have narrowed the roster down as a coaching staff, and these 23 players that you've chosen can focus now purely on Brazil," Klinsmann said. "We can go into more specific things about technical approaches, and about the opponents. For the players, it's very important to know that they are now part of it and they can relax and know they are on the list going to Brazil and taking it from there."
The USA was drawn into Group G of the 2014 FIFA World Cup along with Ghana, Portugal and Germany. The U.S. opens the tournament on June 16 against Ghana, with kickoff at 6 p.m. ET at Estadio Das Dunas in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The USA will then face Portugal on June 22 at 6 p.m. ET at Arena Amazonia in Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, and will finish group play against three-time World Cup champion Germany at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, which is the capital of the state of Pernambuco. Kickoff for the match against Germany is at 12 p.m. ET.
