This week, Louie, a pit bull terrier mix, was surrendered to the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, N.Y., in a state of extreme starvation.

According to the rescue agency, a veterinary exam revealed that Louie's sunken eyes and wasted body are not the result of sickness, but instead, blatant neglect.

Louis was rushed to the veterinarians at Pet Haven Animal Hospital for emergency care and stabilization; his body temperature was so low that it did not register and he was literally fighting to survive.

The rescue agency stated that Louie was transferred to Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group with the assistance Dr. Amy Ford of Noah's Ark Veterinary; there he will receive round-the-clock critical care.

Louie has managed to survive through the night and on Friday, his rescuers shared the following information:

He is able to stand for short periods of time. Louie can even take some baby steps with the help of the supportive staff at Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group. His blood work has also dramatically improved.

The techs and assistants at VERG will tell you his improvements have a lot to do with head rubs and kisses.

Louie is not yet out of the woods, but his odds of survival have vastly improved. Anyone interested in making a donation towards his veterinary care can do so here.
