Four U.S. destroyers are now in position off Syria coast. The U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that they are ready to act on the orders of the President. According to The Toronto Star on Aug. 27, 2013, Hagel predicted that the chemical attack on the Syrian people last week would be proven to have been perpetrated by their own government.
'I think it's pretty clear that chemical weapons were used against people in Syria.'
With the presence of destroyers, Syria is now vulnerable to both U.S. warships and warplanes in the area. Each of the four warships has ballistic missile capability. They are currently under orders to stay put indefinitely. As previously reported in “Russia warns U.S.: Secretary of Defense ready for action (Video),” and “Russia warns U.S.: Foreign Minister cautions against attack on Syria,” this is the next step in the escalation in the Syrian civil war.
The destroyers off Syria include the USS Gravely, and her sister ships, the USS Mahan, the USS Barry and the USS Ramage, all based out of Norfolk, Virginia. The USS Gravely in particular is on its maiden deployment and this is also the first trip overseas for many of the crew.
Possible targets for the Destroyers in Syria include anything tied to launching likely chemical weapons attacks, without risking the chemical stockpiles themselves. Military headquarters, communications facilities, and non-chemical weapons arsenals are all possible targets.
