On March 5, 2013, Demi Lovato revealed in an interview with WBLI-FM (a radio station serving the New York counties of Suffolk and Nassau) that she has a secret half-sister. Meanwhile, her single "Heart Attack" has debuted as a hit on several Billboard charts that Billboard announced on March 6, 2013.
In the WBLI interview, Lovato (who is 20) was asked if she had anything to share with her fans that she has not previously revealed. She replied, "I have an older sister that I've never known my whole life. She's in her 30s. She's my half-sister. I talked to her for the very first time in my life around when I turned 20 [in August 2012].
"I asked her, 'Why haven't you ever contacted me?' She said, 'Well, because I never wanted you to think that I wanted anything from you. So I've just been waiting to see if you wanted a relationship. I thought that was so incredible. So I actually have three sisters, that I didn't know until this year."
Lovato's long-lost half-sister's name and other details about her have not been made public, although Lovato said that she and her long-lost half-sister have the same father. Lovato's other sisters are 25-year-old Dallas Lovato and 11-year-old Madison De La Garza. De la Garza is an actress who is best known for her role as Juanita Solis in "Desperate Housewives."
Lovato became a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in May 2012. She has said in recent interviews that she does not know yet if she will be asked to continue as a judge on the show in 2013, but she would say yes if she is asked.
The news of Lovato's long-lost sister comes just a few days after Tulisa Contostavlos, 24, publicly revealed that she reunited in March 2013 with a long-lost half-brother named Neil Jones, 35, who had been put up for adoption when he was a baby. Jones and Contostavlos have the same father. Contostavlos, who became a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. in May 2011, has not yet announced whether or not is going to continue to be an "X Factor" judge in 2013, but several British tabloids have reported that she has been fired.
Representatives for U.S. and U.K. editions of "The X Factor" will only say that decisions are being made about who will be judges on the show in 2013. As of now, Simon Cowell is the only judge guaranteed to return to "The X Factor" U.S. in 2013. It has been announced many times that Cowell will not be go back to being a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. as long as he is busy with "The X Factor" U.S., whose live episodes take place during the same months as the U.K. show's live episodes. Cowell was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. from 2004 to 2010, and he continues to be an executive producer of "X Factor" shows around the world.
Meanwhile, Lovato is shaping up to have her biggest hit single so far with "Heart Attack," which is the first single from her fourth album. (The album's title and release date are to be announced.) As previously reported, "Heart Attack" debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in the U.S. after it was released on Feb. 25, 2013.
The Billboard chart debuts for the song have now been officially announced. According to Nielsen SoundScan (which provides sales data for Billboard), "Heart Attack" had the biggest first-week sales of all of Lovato's singles. "Heart Attack" sold 215,000 in the U.S. in its first week and debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's Digital Songs chart. Lovato's 2011 single "Skyscraper" was her previous first-week best-selling single, with 176,000 sold in its first week after it was released in July 2011. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "Heart Attack" has debuted at No. 12.
Things are heating up for Lovato's music career and apparently in her love life too. She is rumored to be back together with her on-again/off-again boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, 34, an actor who is best known for playing the character of Fez in the sitcom "That '70s Show." Lovato and Valderrama have been seen together in public acting like a couple, and they reportedly had a romantic Valentine's Day dinner together this year.
In recent interviews, Lovato has refused to comment on her relationship status or love life. She told WBLI: "I actually like to keep my private life, love life and stuff like that ... I like to keep it very sacred. There are some things you just have to keep to yourself. Unfortunately, I would not like to comment."
