Dave Attell is a great comedian and a terrible businessman.
Attell appeared on Friday's Howard Stern Show to promote his late night Showtime endeavor "Dave's Old Porn". During the course of the interview, Attell revealed that he's spent well over $300,000 of his own money financing the show which features comedians critiquing vintage porn clips.
“I'd say from Season 1 to Season 2-$300,000. And with unsold merch? Even more...I’m a horrible producer…I go over budget, but the budget is really low…Under a hundred grand for a show…That’s nothing. Modern Family, you’d get the kid maybe, you wouldn’t get anyone else in the cast.”
Attell said he's shelling out his own cash because he believes in "Dave's Old Porn" and wants to see it done right. On top of dipping into his own funds to finance "DOP," Attell says he's cut way back on his road schedule to make all the decisions about the show edits.
“If I’m editing I can’t be on the road so I’m double not making money.”
Then, Howard Stern dropped the $300,000 question:
"If Showtime believes in the show, why don't they put up the money?"
Attell said he just uses his own money to "get it started" but then admitted he's still waiting to hear back from the network about a renewal for Season 3.
