Darren Wilson's fundraiser hits nearly $200,000, includes donations from racists

Ever since Darren Wilson shot unarmed 18 year old Michael Brown nearly two weeks ago, the town of Ferguson, Missouri has resembled more of a war zone than a peaceful town in the United States. As protesters continue to clash with police, and journalists are arrested, the American people have already began to judge the situation and take sides.

Claiming that the media has been biased toward Michael Brown, and unjust toward Officer Wilson and the local police, supporters of Wilson have set up a "gofundme" charity page to donate money to the officer and his family. The fundraiser titled "Support Officer Darren Wilson" was created on August 17, and as of August 21 had reached over $182,000 in donations.

The summary on the fundraising page reads, "This page has been created to support Officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department. We stand behind Officer Darren Wilson and his family during this trying time in their lives." The page maintains that, "All proceeds will be sent directly to Darren Wilson and his family for any financial needs they may have including legal fees."

Critics of Wilson and the police department have stated that the reaction to the situation was fueled by racial tensions towards African Americans. Though many reject those allegations, the fundraising page is highlighted by questionable donations, including donations made Thursday night by members with the tag "Haten***ers," with the slogan, "my name says it all" written underneath, and another with the tag of "Hitler did nothing wrong." with the note of, "Thank you for putting that feral ape down so it couldn't attack any more people." Screen shots of those statements can be seen here and here.

Most donations seem to be coming from people who have a genuine concern for the officer and his family, but those who seem radical only feed into the criticisms of Wilson and the police department.
