The Stars of New York Dance 2013 Stellar Humanitarian Award recipient Danny Simmons, is an abstract expressionist painter, author of several books, and founder of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization “dedicated to providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant arts exposure and access to the arts.” He also conceived of and co-produced the hit HBO series Def Poetry Jam, which made such an impact that Def Poetry is now offered as an elective at the University of Wisconsin, and won Simmons a Tony Award for the Broadway version of the show.
This gifted community-minded servant of many talents was royally celebrated for his longstanding commitment to uplifting the lives of children and youth through the arts. Many leaders from the political, arts and entertainment communities were on hand in honor of Mr. Simmons, the humanitarian artist with a generous heart.
Mr. Simmons was quite moved by the special presentations as expressed in his statements, “The award ceremony for The Stars of NY Dance brought tears to my eyes … on the real ... a young woman wrote and recited a poem about me that broke me down ... I get a few awards but no ceremony has been this powerful ... they celebrated me with dance testimony and poetry ... I can only say in my humblest voice thank you from the bottom of my heart … I truly felt royal last night at The Stars of NY Dance fundraiser.”
Danny Simmons is the fourth honoree of The Stars of New York Dance annual benefit, founded by Executive Producer Cheryl Todmann, to raise dance education scholarship funds for children from low-income communities. Simmons also served as dance competition judge in two prior years.
