Cuban immigrant to Oregon lawmakers on gun control: 'Marxism is here'

Manuel Martinez, an immigrant who fled Castro's Cuba, shredded Oregon lawmakers in a YouTube video posted Monday at the DC Clothesline, telling elected officials that "Marxism is here."

“Marxism is not coming, Marxism is here,” a passionate Martinez told the state's Senate Judiciary Committee, speaking out against Senate Bill 1551, which if passed, would expand strict background checks to private sales of guns.

"Marxism has been in this country for quite a while and the politicians allow that because they are ignorant or they are part of the plot," he added.

Martinez spoke out strongly against the bill, calling it a step towards gun control and eventual confiscation.

“Don’t sell me this. A very powerful man tried to sell me this 50-something years ago, I didn’t buy it. This is Marxism, plain and clear," he said. “Do you think I’m going to buy it now?”

Martinez also compared the actions of lawmakers to those in Communist Cuba, accusing them of performing a bait-and-switch.

"They put this dog and pony show saying hey, we are going to protect you. No, what they did was enslave a country. They destroyed a country the same way that this country is going to be destroyed if we continue in this fashion. This is what you’re selling here," he said.

At this point, Martinez displayed Communist propaganda magazines, showing them to the audience behind him.

"You are not selling protection. You don’t care if we die or live. This is what you’re selling," he added, prompting applause from the audience that was quickly shut down by the panel.

A post at the GOP Daily Dose said Martinez is "more attuned to the reality of the threat to America than most of the native born population."

USA Today said that testimony lasted for two hours with passionate pleas from both sides, including retired Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, whose wife -- former Rep. Gabby Giffords -- was shot in 2011.

In a stunning display of hypocrisy, however, Kelly went shooting at the Portland Police Bureau Central Precinct Range after testifying in favor of the bill.

Kevin Starrett, director of the Oregon Firearm Federation, said the bill could lead to registration and eventual confiscation, but was dismissed as a conspiracy theorist by Sen. Floyd Prozanski, the Eugene Democrat who authored the bill.

"We all know what this bill is about. This is a gun registration and confiscation bill. Let's not tell the same lies we told in New York and California," Starrett said.

Prozanski said Tricia Whitfield, the woman who runs the state's background check program, testified that information on approved sales are destroyed after 10 days, USA Today said.

"I understand your conspiracist perspective," he said when Starrett questioned the truthfulness of the claim.
