CSGV tries to bully newly elected senator for rejecting extreme gun restrictions

Last Sunday, newly elected United States Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) appeared on the ABC News program "This Week." During the program, when George Stephanopoulos asked her if she would be willing to talk about "gun control," she bucked her party's rabidly anti-gun stance, accurately describing it as "way in the extreme." The Obama administration, remember, has endorsed Senator Feinstein's confiscatory "assault weapons" ban, and banning all private gun sales--and that's just the beginning.

"Extreme" sounds like a pretty accurate term to describe that position, at least if "tyrannical," and "criminal" are off the table. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, of course, shrilly disagrees. Just a few examples from their Facebook page:

In the wake of Sandy Hook, reforms like background checks on all gun sales are too "extreme" for Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). Why not call her at (202) 224-3121 and tell her how you feel about that?

. . . and:

Yesterday, Senator Heidi Heitkamp said reforms like background checks on all gun sales are too "extreme" for her to consider in the wake of Sandy Hook. Why not call the good Senator at (202) 224-3121 and tell her how you feel about her remarks?

. . . and:

OK, folks... We have now filled up the voicemail of Senator Heidi Heitkamp with messages in response to her comment that considering reforms to gun laws in the wake of Sandy Hook is "extreme." So now let's contact her via email. Here are emails for her staffers:

Emily_Crerand@heitkamp.senate.gov
Tessa_Gould@heitkamp.senate.gov
Bethany_Martindale@heitkamp.senate.gov

Let's let them know how we feel about her remarks.

The self-described "progressive" Americablog also got in on the act, calling her a "hired gun nut," and bizarrely holding her up--mere days after reporting to Washington D.C.--as an example of "Washington corruption in action."

CSGV has also bought ads to run in Politico, Roll Call, and several North Dakota newspapers, exploiting the Sandy Hook Elementary atrocity and excoriating her for opposing so-called "assault weapons" bans (Connecticut has such a ban) and private sales bans (whether or not the killer's weapons used in Newtown were bought without background checks, the buyer--the killer's mother, and first victim--would by all accounts have passed even the vastly more invasive sort of checks demanded by Senator Schumer). These ads also urge readers to call Senator Heitkamp and chastise her for having the courage to stand up to her party.

Senator Heitkamp has taken an honorable and principled stand (and not without courage, for a brand new senator), and is now under attack for it. As gun rights advocates, the least we can do is let her know, via phone (the number again is 202- 224-3121), Facebook and Twitter, that we greatly appreciate it.

We must not let the bullies win.
