Could golfer Dustin Johnson represent Canada at the Olympics?

In just over three years from now the sport of golf will be making its return at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Due to the latest celebrity romance, it might give the Canadian Olympic Committee reason to smile. According to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports in a report on Tuesday, golfer Dustin Johnson is currently dating Paulina Gretzky.

Yes, the daughter of Canadian hockey great Wayne Gretzky.

If Johnson was to marry Paulina in the near future, he could possibly be a Canadian. Paulina Gretzky is Canadian-American, and according to the Canadian Nationality Law on Wikipedia a Canadian by definition is:

"Every person born outside Canada after 15 February 1977, who has a Canadian parent at the time of birth, is automatically a Canadian citizen by descent."

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the top fifteen golfers in the world will automatically qualify for the Olympic Games, and the next 45 spots will open to golfers from countries who do not already have two players that have qualified.

At the present time, Graham deLaet of Weyburn Saskatchewan is ranked 178th in the world and David Hearn of Brampton, Ontario is ranked 215th.

How quickly Johnson, who is currently ranked 13th in the world, would be apply for Canadian citizenship is another matter, considering the golf regulations regarding nationality and Canadian immigration laws are very complex when it comes to the matter. However, just the mere fact Johnson is dating Paulina Gretzky, gives Canadian sports fans hope.
