Texas Republican Congressman Steve Stockman announced Wednesday, January 8, 2014 that he is organizing opposition to an anti-gun control bill which is expected to be soon filed by U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Lindsay Graham, which appears to closely follow an Executive Order issued last Friday by President Barack Obama.
The "Graham-Cornyn Mental Health and Criminal Justice Reform Act" would have the same effect of President Obama's Executive Order we wrote about yesterday, which expands the NICS to include Americans who have either been treated or visited a mental health professional. In its current form, we understand it does not distinguish if the veteran or civilian was deemed a danger to them self or to the public, just would be denied their Second Amendment right for visiting a mental health professional. When the actual bill is filed, we will report again as to its affects, however we do have the outline described by Graham and Cornyn.
The bill could gut Graham's public reputation of supporting veterans as they are expected to be widely affected by the legislation. Based on Graham's voting record, he has never been much for increasing an individual's freedom, but rather restricting one's freedom, which is opposite of what most veterans went overseas to fight in support of maximizing American's freedoms.
Congressman Stockman did not mince words bashing Cornyn's partipcation in the bill, saying, “Cornyn’s Bloomberg Bill is the Holy Grail of gun control. Cornyn’s Bloomberg Bill is an aggressive expansion of the anti-gun agenda. Unable to ban guns they are now banning law-abiding gun owners, and Cornyn is leading the charge. John Cornyn has opened a new front in the Left's War on Guns by now seeking to ban law-abiding gun owners. Cornyn’s Bloomberg Bill is the same gun control bill demanded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and appears to be nearly identical to Barack Obama's latest Executive Order. With Republicans like Cornyn who needs Democrats? It throws millions of Americans on a lifetime gun ban list without a court hearing or due process of law. Even worse, Cornyn’s Bloomberg Bill strips military veterans of their constitutional rights just for speaking to a medical professional about their combat experience. There is nothing more un-American than stripping law-abiding veterans of their constitutional rights.”
H.R. 577 was introduced by Stockman last year which would require judges to issue an order that a veteran is a danger to himself or to others before a veteran would lose his or her ability to purchase or carry a firearm. Stockman also introduced H.R. 410, the 'Restore Constitution Act', with an identical bill in the U.S. Senate introduced by Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky ( S. 82 ). H.R. 410/S. 82 would have the effect of prohibiting funding for Executive Orders that are deemed beyond a President's constitutional authority. Both bills are stuck in committees.
