Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the area east of the Chesapeake Bay, is most known for its beaches and seafood but it now has a burgeoning wine trail. The climate and sandy soil are ideal for growing grapes. The Chesapeake Wine Trail will open up new vistas for the oenophile.
The Crow family re-imagined their family farm and in 2010 planted a 4 acre vineyard with additional acres planted in 2012. Achieving great success early with their 2012 Vidal Blanc and Barbera Rosé which just won gold medals at the 23rd Annual Maryland Governor’s Cup. A small vineyard at this time, you won’t be seeing them at the large wine festivals – they aren’t producing in those quantities but the wines are available for tasting and purchase at the vineyard.
Like the Italian agriturismo, Crow Farm is a fine example of agritourism (agriculture plus tourism) offering vacationing opportunities in a real farm house on a real working farm. Guests have a choice of helping on the farm, enjoying wine tastings or meandering on their own. The tasting room is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekends, call in advance on weekdays.
Formerly a dairy farm, the Crow family now raises grass-fed beef supplying local restaurateurs and local families with quality beef. Whether a host to a wedding or corporate retreat, the Crow Farm and Vineyard consistently offers up events for all to enjoy:
November 1, 2013 – Halloween Party – a costume affair with hay ride, wine tasting and samples of Crow Farm beef.
November 3, 2013 – Harvest Lunch from 1 to 3 p.m. – Chef Sabrina Sexton, lead instructor from Institute of Culinary Education – New York. The menu is based on farm fresh and local products for the family style meal along with the winery tour.
Take a moment to listen to Judy Crow on a video they created two years ago. Since that time their wines have been award-winning. Learn more about Crow Farm, Vineyard and Bed & Breakfast
