Although Cheekwood in Bloom promised to dazzle guests with colorful tulips from March 22 - April 27 at the Botanical Gardens in Belle Meade, Sat. March 22 presented the more subdued colors of spring with only a handful of tulips starting to bloom due to the late winter. Although the lack of the tulip display was a disappointment, the rest of Cheekwood's offerings more than made up for the non-existent tulip display.
Many spring trees were in bloom or in bud with the magnificent star magnolias a real show-stopper. A hidden field of crocus blooms made a pretty picture, and daffodils bloomed in several places. If the daffodils outside were pretty, they were nothing in comparison to the daffodil show inside where jonquils and narcissus of all colors, shapes and sizes amazed visitors.
Outside jazz played in the herb garden while a Japanese tea ceremony was held in the Japanese garden. Cheekwood guide Anna Knauff led a group from Bellevue, Antioch, Smyrna, Mt. Juliet, and walkers from the Bellevue-based HikeNashville through the Japanese garden pointing out flora, discussing the occasional fauna and explaining the various structures. She continued her tour of various gardens and displays, taking guests almost up to the mansion, then on to the Howe garden, past the treehouse and herb garden back to the visitor's center.
A beautiful day complimented Cheekwood's outdoor activities and made it a noteworthy experience. The tulips should begin blooming before the end of the month.
