Cheating marathon runner: Singapore runner admits cheating ‘for years’

It takes a special kind of athlete to run a marathon. An extreme level of fitness and training coupled with the drive and determination to push your body to the extremes. Or, just a gutless desire to cheat.

The latter was the case for a Singapore pastry chef, 43-year-old Tam Chua Puh, who admitted to his cheating ways, and furthermore said he’s been deceiving race organizers for years, reports the AFP via Yahoo! News on Thursday.

Tam said that out of the 42 km Singapore race, he had only run six kilometers before stopping because of knee pain. He then took a “short cut” to the finish line, coming in several minutes ahead of the rest of the pack.

Tam offered this explanation and apology:

“I am sorry if I offended anyone. I never thought I would create so much inconvenience for the organizers,” he said. “I never thought about going home midway. It would have been like giving up.”

Yes, exactly what you should have done if you could not finish. Not bilked your way to the first place ribbon.

Tam said that in each of the last two Singapore marathons, he quit halfway and hitched rides to the finish line! No word on if the pastry chef stopped to enjoy any tarts or cupcakes on his hitchhiked commute straight to first place. This time however, race organizers were on to him, and quickly disqualified Tam after he missed all the checkpoints.

Tam said he cheated because he just “wanted a T-shirt and a medal.”
