October-December the city comes alive for the holidays and all the store windows and other businesses are decorated to the hilt. Although I do recommend seeing this at least once in your life this is the most expensive time to visit New York City. If you can plan a summer trip up for the weekend you will save a ton of money. Many New Yorkers actually leave the city for the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard on the weekends so the restaurants etc are less crowded. Business slows a little in summer and you can get better deals on hotels and other venues.
Stay at Pod 39 or Pod 51-Just think smaller not less luxurious. These new pod hotels offer a bed, TV, Wi-Fi and everything you would get in any hotel just in a smaller space with a lower price tag. Since you really are in the city for sightseeing and an experience why not stay somewhere less expensive. The location is great for both of the new Pod Hotels.
Share a room with your mom, two or three girl or guy friends and share the costs. Again, you are there for the experience not the lush suite at the Ritz Carlton. Usually hotels in New York City charge $40 a night for a roll away bed so inquire ahead of time about the price and pay when you get there.
You can fly into Newark, NJ and stay at a lower price hotel near Liberty Airport. You will need to take the NJ subway or Olympic Trails Bus line from Liberty Airport. You can get into the city on the Olympic Trails Line for $12 which is a huge bargain. I often fly into Newark just for the Olympic Trails bus alone if the airfare is the same price to Newark or La Guardia. The fare to get into the city from La Guardia can be $30.00. With three airports nearby Kennedy JFK, La Guardia, and Newark you should have no problem getting a deal a few times a year for New York City.
Forget the pricey restaurants and hit Chinatown. You can eat like a king on Vietnamese Food, traditional Chinese, Dim Sum Brunch with your friends, or Korean food. Grab your coffee in a Greek blue key cup off of a cart or for free in the lobby of your hotel and walk to the museums. The Museums work on a donation basis and the recommended daily admission is $25 if you just don’t have this much money explain that you are a student or unemployed etc and offer to donate less. The Metropolitan Museum is a great experience if you have never been there. Don’t forget the roof terrace to get some outstanding free skyline pictures of the city. New York has something for everyone from Broadway shows, to museums. It is an outstanding place to visit with your friends for a fun weekend.
