According to CBC Sports, world champion Patrick Chan of Ottawa, Ontario is in second place after the short program in men's figure skating at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Chan recorded a score of 97.52 points and is 3.93 points back of Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan who put together a perfect performance in the short program and set a short program world record in the process with a score of 101.45 points.

Chan's biggest mistake was double footing a triple axel. It does appear however that medals for Hanyu and Chan are guarantees because Chan is 10.54 points ahead of Javier Fernandez of Spain, who is in third place.

As for Kevin Reynolds of Vancouver, British Columbia, he finished in 17th place. Reynolds, like Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford in the pairs competition earlier this week, seemed to have their energy zapped in the men's and pairs respectively after winning a silver medal in the team competition.

The men's long program will take place Friday at 8:00 a.m. mountain time on TSN.
