CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon is one of the most respected and decorated journalists around. Winner of 22 Emmy awards for his outstanding reporting that includes the first profile of the so-called "Lost Boys of Sudan", and an exclusive interview with Iraqi Shiite insurgency leader Muqtada al-Sadr, Simon is a pioneer in international journalism, which is why his presence at the Wild Card Gym last Wednesday created quite a stir among other media personnel.
The reason being is that Simon is doing a report on boxing's best and most popular fighter Manny Pacquiao for 60 Minutes to be aired on November 7. Pacquiao is only the second boxer after 'The Golden Boy' Oscar Dela Hoya to be featured on the show by Simon.
When asked about Pacquiao's story and his venture into politics, Simon had some valuable insights to share. "There are thousands of politicians in this world; There's only one top boxer," Simon told Fanhouse's Elie Seckbach. Truly, the most insightful thoughts need not a lot of words and no further elaboration.
Also asked why they are featuring Pacquiao on the groundbreaking and popular 60 Minutes show, Simon replied, "He's the best of the best. We go for the best of the best. If he was the number 2 fighter in the world, we wouldn't cover him."
Nobody else could've said it more succinctly.
