The 2014 NCAA football TV games bowl schedule reveals a variety of compelling matchups to start the new year 2014 off with a bang. Among the games will be the Capital One Bowl 2014 edition, taking place on Jan. 1, 2014 in Orlando, Florida at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Competing in this annual bowl game will be the No.19 Wisconsin Badgers and No.9 South Carolina Gamecocks, both of whom went 6-2 in their respective conferences. They’ll look to start off their new year ahead of next season on a good note, as the latest televised NCAA bowl game on the schedule comes to fans via ESPN networks.
According to ESPN.com on Jan. 1, these two teams are on opposite streaks when it comes to their past three bowl games. The Gamecocks, who finished the season at 10-2 overall, are looking to win a third-straight bowl game. They won last year’s Outback Bowl against Michigan. Wisconsin, who finished this 2013 season 9-3 overall, has lost three straight Rose Bowl games, and will look for a bounce back bowl game win today.
Of note, South Carolina is also riding a five-game winning streak, with the latest game a 31-17 victory over then-No. 6 Clemson. Among those games they also defeated then-No.5 Missouri 27-24 back in late October, so playing ranked competition hasn’t been an issue for this team, which was once in search of a BCS berth. The Gamecocks feature standout defense end Jadeveon Clowney, predicted to be a top NFL draft pick in the 2014 draft. He recently told the media with regards to today’s opponent:
"They can run the ball pretty well. They'll try to pound it at us. We've got to be ready to stop the run. I think they pass the ball a lot more than you expect. They do a lot of play-action pass."
Clowney is right about that, as Wisconsin finished eighth in the nation in rushing yards with 283 per game. The attack on the ground was led by two players as Melvin Gordon had 1,466 yards and 12 touchdowns on 181 carries, while James White had 1,337 yards and 13 touchdowns as well. Quarterback Joel Stave helped guide the team as well, with his 2,414 passing yards and 20 touchdowns on 199-for-323 completed passes.
For South Carolina, they ranked at 13th in the nation in terms of defense, limiting teams to 20 a game, thanks to Clowney’s contributions and others along with him. Connor Shaw has been a highly-watched quarterback for the Gamecocks, as the senior is likely to be a coveted 2014 draft pick in the NFL for a team in need of a QB. On the season, Shaw racked up 2,135 yards and 21 touchdowns on 158-of-259 completed passes. Bruce Ellington led the team in receiving yards with 635 total and six touchdowns, while Damiere Byrd added 575 yards and four touchdowns.
Today’s Capital One Bowl game odds favor Wisconsin by as many as 2 points after they initially opened as 1-point favorites. The over/under total points bet for the game is set at 51 points after opening at 49. The weather is expected to be cloudy with a 70% chance of rain and a kick off temperature in the mid 60’s.
Wednesday's Capital One Bowl 2014 has a scheduled start time of 1 p.m. EST for the Wisconsin vs. South Carolina game. This matchup will be televised for sports fans on ABC in standard and hi-definition formats.
