Canadian animal group offers $1K award to find seal killers; 50 found dead

A Canadian animal group is diligently looking for information in the horrific deaths of 50 grey seals off the coast of Prince Edward Island last weekend.

CBC News reported Saturday that the Humane Society International (HSI) were offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person or persons responsible for the bludgeoning of the animals.

Necropsy results on 10 of about 50 seals found washed up dead showed they were bashed with a blunt object. The seals were found dead or dying by a group of veterinary students near Beach Point.

The dead included both young pups and adult seals, HSI said.

HSI said the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) was forced to euthanize many of the seal pups.

In a release, the group called the deaths a "massacre."

"What we do know was that this was a vicious act of cruelty that was absolutely criminal in nature and must be prosecuted by the authorities," said Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of the animal rights group in Canada.

Officials from the DFO are investigating.

HSI hopes to bring charges against the perpetrators under both the Fisheries Act and the Criminal Code of Canada since the deaths are not connected to any sanctioned seal hunt.

They are encouraging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.
