Rudy, the 10-year-old camel that was on the loose and hit by a car on Tuesday afternoon, gave CHP officers quite a challenge after it had collided with a red Honda minivan. Fortunately for camel Rudy and the driver of the Honda minivan, neither one were injured reported The Oakland Tribune on Feb. 5, 2013.
Camel Rudy was walking along Bailey Road in Concord, Calif., when the camel-car collision occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013.
Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, camel Rudy was first seen walking along in the middle of Bailey Road. Motorists who saw the camel in the middle of the road stopped and successfully convinced Rudy that the side of the road was a much safer place for camels. Soon Rudy began grazing on the shoulder of the road.
When CHP officers arrived, Rudy was escorted safely back into his pen which belongs to DB Inc. Land & Cattle Co. and Bailey Road appeared to be available for car traffic again around 3:30 p.m.
For camel Rudy, the open road and the greener grass on the other side of the fence was more appealing than the wired enclosure which was several miles from the road.
So Rudy escaped again.
Unfortunately, this time camel Rudy’s escape ended up in a collision with a red Honda minivan. According to witness reports, after the camel-car collision, Rudy “got up and first walked, then ran around the road.”
After camel Rudy’s second open-road adventure resulted in a camel-car collision, the animal was understandably frightened and this time it took several hours to get Rudy back to his pen.
Raymond Ferrante, who is Rudy’s owner and works as a manager at DB Inc. eventually brought his trailer and was able to convince his spooked and frightened camel to be transported back home.
"’He's fine, he's hot and his adrenaline's pumping, but he's fine,’ Ferrante said. ‘I have never done this before, so I can put (rescuing a camel) on my resume’."
Raymond Ferrante ensured all concerned parties that Rudy, now known as the camel that was hit by a car, will be checked by a veterinarian on Wednesday morning to make sure he is fine.
Will Rudy finally be able to resist the call of the open road?
