Bakersfield and San Joaquin Valley school districts and charter schools are eligible for millions of dollars in funding for energy projects and the California Energy Commission (CEC) wants to help them get it. With over $380 million available this fiscal year, the CEC announced yesterday that it will be holding workshops throughout the state, including Bakersfield and Fresno, to help school district and local educational agency (LEA) administrators apply for the monies.

The funds are available as the result of Proposition 39, the Clean Energy Jobs Act, which voters approved in 2012. Prop. 39 changed the way that out-of-state businesses pay California income taxes. The resultant revenues were then earmarked for energy improvement projects and to create clean energy jobs for LEAs, including county offices of education, school districts, charter schools, and state special schools.

CEC is partnering with the California Department of Education, California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, California Public Utilities Commission, California Workforce Investment Board, the Division of the State Architect, and the California Conservation Corps to implement the program.

Projects that improve energy efficiency not only can reduce costs but also can significantly reduce air pollution emissions, including greenhouse gases.
